Please join in wishing our humble blog, the Lunch Pail, a very happy first birthday. We could sing, but I'm sure no one wants to hear that. Instead, let's take a look at the best offerings on the Lunch Pail in the last year. Requiring our variety of distinguished digital marketing experts to publish a minimum of three times a week (12n Eastern Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) has built up a seriously thorough collection of content. In case you missed some of these now hidden gems, here are some highlights from our first year. Most Popular
Our most popular post is Casey’s dealing with the Verizon-Alltel merger and what it means for mobile marketing as a whole. She explains, in part, that these mergers take time, which is why we’re all still lucky enough to have Chad in our lives.
Most Creative
This was judged, rather subjectively, by me. I’m awarding this moniker to Bryce’s post on how digital marketing strategy is like a small ball strategy in a baseball game. I like the creativity of the analogy, how topical it was (during the baseball playoffs), and the comparison of an online marketer’s toolkit to a baseball line up. Also, I really like baseball (that’s the subjective part).
Most Controversial Topic
This was easy, as behavioral targeting still generates the most organic search hits, and general ire pitting consumers against some more aggressive affiliate marketers (and others… it’s complicated). This post was a review of a round table discussion I participated in at Shop.org’s Annual Summit last year which dug into the politics of behavioral targeting at the Federal level. The debate still rages over who decides what a violation is, and then who gets to enforce it. It’s an evolving topic we continually take an interest in and will continue to cover.
Most Controversial Post
This winner was a relatively simple post from Knotice’s CEO and Co-Founder, Brian Deagan. He made the controversial statement that “good email marketing shouldn’t cost more” (gasp!). He cited an article by a ClickZ author who claimed the opposite, and a brief debate ensued. If you missed that one, it’s worth checking out.
Most Popular Series
This is a tie between Lesley’s “101” series, where she gives unique perspective on digital marketing from a newcomers perspective and Bryce’s “Relevance Week” series which covered all aspects of relevance in digital marketing, from identifying the barriers to easy tips on how to include relevance in digital marketing. Both are bits hits, with Chris’ “Buzz Words Demystified” a close second place.
For any first time readers, here are a couple of handy references you can read (then pass around to your friends). If you’re confused as to why a bunch of software and marketing people would have a blog called “The Lunch Pail” this link will explain it. If you want to know what this bunch of software and marketing people DO, this link explains that.
