So, if asking how many website visitors are hitting your site a mobile device is a legitimate question, how can you get the answer? Fortunately, there are a couple of methods that give some indication of mobile traffic… a defacto “poor man’s” version of mobile Web analytics.
Using any Web analytics platform, check out the screen resolution reports. If you see 320×396, that is probably an iPhone. Also check out the browser detail report. There it is easy to see browsers like BlackBerry9630. Obviously, that is decidedly less scientific than what will be available in the next 6 months. It is not 100 percent accurate, and those numbers will likely under-represent the volume of mobile traffic.
Analyze that bit of data, knowing the total population is below what reality is. When all of the data is analyzed the real question becomes, “What is the threshold of visitors that will necessitate a mobile Web or app presence?” If that number is floating around ten percent, it is time to start thinking about building a mobile website. It is nearly impossible to find a FORMER smartphone user. As adoption increases, so will traffic to your website from a mobile device. Use existing technology to create a better, more welcoming mobile experience.
